At the 'Celebrating Brampton' event on 28th June was the launch of the campaign 'say NO to plastic bags'.

Help Brampton go plastic bag free!

Why?

PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC BUT DAMAGES OUR ENVIRONMENT

·        Litters our streets and countryside

·        Blows into rivers and into the sea

·        Kills marine life

Plastic bags are manufactured in their billions across the world

Each person uses an average of 300 plastic carrier bags in a year

Each reusable carrier bag could save 1000 plastic carrier bags

Help spread the word

Help spread the word

It’s up to us

How?

We can all choose….

·        To say no to plastic bags wherever we are

·        To remember our reusable bags when we go shopping

·        To reuse any plastic bags we have at home

"Brampton Chamber of Trade will produce an alternative (i.e. not plastic) 'Brampton Bag' which will be available in shops by Christmas.
The next step is to get traders to sign a 'gentlemen's agreement' that they will no longer provide platic bags for their customers. Although not all traders and businesses in Brampton are members, and although some have understandable problems about how they would cope without plastic bags (eg fish and meat) there was positive support for finding alternatives to plastic.   Only if all traders do this can Brampton call itself 'plastic bag free'.

As we have gone along with this project we have realised that getting rid of plastic carrier bags is an achievable goal.  More difficult is to find alternatives to the smaller plastic bags (eg for collecting different items of fruit and veg) and plastic wrapping necessary for correct hygiene standards (eg fish and meat).   This is something we can tackle subsequently.

It is also worth noting that traders report many of their customers are now in the habit of bringing their own shopping bags".
